CLUBS & CLASSES

DESCRIPTION

LUNCHEON CLUB

A thriving Luncheon Club – with Caribbean style meals:  hot, spicy, nutritiously filling and very appetising.

DEVOTION

At this centre we like to start our week with a Monday morning devotional period. Our devotional period lasts for one hour and takes place in the main hall, which is situated on the ground floor. During the devotional period there is time allotted for open prayer, anyone that wishes to offer a prayer or blessing is welcome to do so.

IT CLASS

In our fully equipped and up to date IT learning suite, you will be taught essential computer skills, surf the Internet and E-mail your friends and family. The IT classes are run twice weekly and are held on Mondays and Tuesdays from 10:30am -12:30am. This course is very popular so you will need to enrol as soon as possible. If you would like more information on registering for these classes please call our Information Unit  020 8682 0733.

BEREAVEMENT CLASS

Bereavement classes are held once fortnightly. The classes are of one-hour duration. During the class members are encouraged to talk openly about both the good and bad times spent with their partners or loved ones when they were alive.
Set in a warm, friendly and understanding environment, bereaved members receive the support and encouragement, which is so often necessary, in helping them to come to terms with their loss.

HEALTH CLINIC

The Health Clinic is held every other Wednesday and provides a number of services to members including, routine checks on blood pressure and urine analysis in addition to advice on issues relevant to the health of the elderly.
This service is provided free of charge and in the strictest confidence. So, if you have a health issue you would like to discuss or perhaps some advice on what to do next, please feel free to make the most of this service.

AROMATHERAPY

Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of essential oils to heal and revitalize the body and mind. During the classes you will be taught how to mix, prepare and create your own fragrances, create your own bath salts and oils, as well as how the various aromatic smells can assist in helping you to balance, stimulate, relax, invigorate and rejuvenate both body and mind.

TAI - CHI

Tai Chi is a ‘soft’ form of martial art which is primarily practiced for its health benefits. Unlike the hard martial arts, Tai Chi uses soft, slow, flowing movements, rather than brute strength. Essentially a form of ‘meditation in motion’ Tai Chi is an ideal form of exercise for the older person.

ART CLASS

Art classes are on Fridays from 11.00 – 13:00 hrs. and are located on the upper floor of the main hall. The art class provides members with an opportunity to express themselves through the medium of ink, charcoal, pencil or paint.
These classes are well attended and professionally taught. So, whether you are a budding Picasso or just looking to develop new skills - come along and join in the fun, you may even surprise yourself.

BRIDGE

The Bridge Club takes place on Tuesday afternoons. Here in a friendly, relaxed and informal setting members can take their time and learn the skills of playing bridge. Over the years many of our Bridge Club members have developed to become very proficient players, who are now able to compete with country - wide professionals.

DOMINOES

This is such a noisy team that you don’t really need to be told where the club is situated. But just in case you do have difficulty hearing – the club is located on the upper level of the Main Hall. The club starts at about 14.00 hrs and members keep playing until they are asked to vacate the premises. As well as holding competitions among themselves the members also arrange competitions against other clubs.

BINGO

Bingo is held in the main hall after lunchtime on Tuesday afternoon – when its eyes down - at 10p a card. Prizes are usually a can of coke or something similar. However, the roar of house can be heard for miles.

CHOIR

Wednesday is Choir day this is truly an enjoyable time for all of us at the Centre. Everyone gathers with his or her choir folder to sing (even the hardened dominoes players). During this time members practice solos or melodies taught to them by our very own Choir Mistress. Occasionally, the Choir day is also used as a background for birthdays and other annual celebrations.

KEEP FIT

Located in the main hall this class is well attended but there’s always room for more. The exercises are specifically designed to cater to the needs of the elderly, focusing on areas such as joint mobility, posture, balance and coordination to mention only a few.
The teacher keeps it nice and slow for our less energetic members but the music to which the exercises are performed is good and the members love the challenge.

BIRTHDAYS

As you can imagine because of the number of members we have at the Age Activity Centre, there’s a birthday nearly every day. So instead of a celebration sing - along or a toast every day, birthdays are kept to a Wednesday when all the birthdays in that week are announced and celebrated.
