The Age Activity Centre, formally known as the "Wandsworth Black Elderly Project (W.B.E.P)", is a charitable organisation that was set up in 1984 by our parent organisation  "RURAL BREAKS" to meet the needs of the Black Elderly living in the borough of Wandsworth. Providing for them a community centre where participants could have social interaction with people of their own race and culture as well as the opportunity to learn and develop new skills and to maximise on experiences gained throughout their lives in the UK.

The centre, which is currently located at 966 Garratt Lane, has a distinct Caribbean flavour and although in essence it is still geared to meet the needs of the black elderly, it is 'inclusive' and welcomes people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds who may be looking for an environment that's just a "little bit different".

A Centre of excellence

The Age Activity Centre is a centre of excellence and provides a wide range of activities and services that include:

  • A thriving Luncheon Club - with  Caribbean style meals hot, spicy, nutritiously filling and very appetising.

  • A gospel Choir - which is run by the  members.

  • A dominoes club - which competes on a regular basis with similar clubs from other boroughs.

  • A very competitive Bridge Club.

  • Art Classes.

  • Keep - Fit.

  • Tai Chi.

  • Aromatherapy.

  • A Health Screening Clinic.

  • Bereavement Counselling.

  • I.T. Classes.

In addition to the many clubs and classes that are available throughout the week we also hold several seminars and a conference on issues of concern to the elderly, as well as day trips, mini breaks and exciting holidays abroad once a year.

A warm and caring environment

The Age Activity Centre is a professional and caring  organisation, you will find the staff   helpful, friendly and always willing to go that extra mile to make each day you spend with us a happy and memorable  one. Set in a warm, caring environment, our members are encouraged to forge links, develop friendships, maximise on their talents and remain  young - proud - happy and independent.

Indoor Gardens

A stroll through our conservatory gardens, which are filled with a wide variety of  tropical plants, creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere right from the very start and soon helps you to forget the world outside. The plants, all of which have been  donated to the centre by members both past and present, are cared for and nurtured by our current members.

Information Unit

One of our primary aims at the Age Activity Centre is providing our members with  necessary information that will help to alleviate some of the problems encountered in daily life. Our Information Unit which is an integral part of the Centre provides helpful advice and information associated with: Welfare Benefits, Housing, Pensions and many other areas of concern related to the older person, and in 2002 was awarded the Community Legal Service Quality Mark.
